Applying phonics skills in the homeroom classroom

Hi!  I have a question regarding what people are having students do to apply what they're learning in their PRESS phonics interventions.  I want to make sure that students are using what they're learning and that they are retaining it as well.  One way I have tried to do that is by asking students to record words that follow the phonics pattern that they notice when they're reading in their classroom.  The primary kids do this in a little recording book and the intermediate students have a chart.  Have other people tried out other methods for application/retention of phonics?  Maybe I should check my interventions manual for more ideas as well?
