Path to Reading Excellencein School Sites
I am working with a 5th-grade student who says "And Uh" after several words or phrases within a fluency passage. We do talk to him, and I have him take a deep breath before he starts to read. It is getting a little better but I am wondering if there is something I can do to help him kick this habit. His accuracy is excellent. His fluency score is approximately 112 at this point.
Any suggestions would be wonderful!

I also have a 6th grade student who puts the -a sound at the end of words. Such as, "I took the-a dog-a to the-a park-a...". I found some chunked reading passages on the Florida Center for Reading Research page. That seemed to help a little.
Tell the student to slow his reading down. This is a problem when the student tries to read too fast and they feel like they need to fill up all of the down time with "uhs" The student will find out when they read slower they will reduce the "uh" sounds and actually read faster.
